History and environment of the island of Pantelleria (part of Sicily in Italy – in the middle of Mediterranean sea, 70 km from the coastal line of Tunisy) is the subject of this first documentary, also pilot for the tv format MEDITERRANEAN 3D – Travels in the third dimension of the unknown Mediterranean culture.
The project contains a high potential expressed through the voices of key figures such as the Archeologist working on location to discover the origins of a Neolithic population living on the island 4.000 ca. years ago or the modern entrepreneur working on the recovering, conservation and the exploitation of what the ancient inhabitants have built across the centuries.
The factual entertainment language associated to real-life entertainment, combining on-location footage together with post-production processed images, offers a tool of communication able to activate a narrative flow that more than playing on a fiction-reality mix, aims at the self-description – satisfying the need of self-representation, exposure and exhibition of the leading roles – and the ability of reflection inside the proposed tale, finding answers about the cultural-identity aspects of the place, in order to enhance its value.
The use of the new 3D technology improves the grammar of the product emphasising its reality aspect.
The use of CGI3D elements in post-production will facilitate the comprehension of some sequences and, along with footage of the archeological excavation of ancient burial structures named “Sesi”, will document the passage of a Neolithic population on the island.
Rationale of Distribution
As the rate of change in content distribution technology is outpacing, the rate of change in production technology, audio-visual entertainment products and services are becoming more personalized and adaptable. The implementation of new technology has strongly reshaped the AV market structure. At this stage, technological trends are leading to convergence of services, delivery technologies and end-users’ equipment concerned with the audiovisual, telecommunication and information technology sectors, i.e. the transmission of content is no longer the exclusive domain of the broadcasting network (cable, satellite and terrestrial networks) but classical telecommunications network too are becoming increasingly important in the dissemination of contents.
The characteristics of the Content (cultural, formative, recreational, aesthetical, viral) chosen for the project “Mediterranean 3D”, take in consideration the modern and future trend of fruition methods of products and services for the entertainment. Thanks to them we can improve the foundation of an Integrated Multimedia Project on a cross-media distribution for a trans-media fruition.
“Pantelleria 3D”, pilot of the “Mediterranean 3D” series, is an audio-visual production focusing on the historical, archeological and environmental heritage of the Mediterranean area, ideal for the Cultural Tourism sector of the audiovisual market.
This sector was chosen for the constant growing demand for highly symbolical and evocative contents, not only on a local basis (European), but, above all, for the Asian and Northern American markets.
The previsions on the growing trend of 3D television within the domestic environment and the expansion of personal mobile devices and SOHO displays, together with the development of new 3D visual technologies by major multinational electronic companies, have directed us on a production with stereoscopic audiovisual contents; the choice, also, we are still observing a strong lack in the offer of such contents, but there will surely be a significantly strong demand in the near future.
Production Budget Criteria
In order to make a financially competitive production of a serial of audiovisuals related not only to the editorial project of Mediterranean3D in function of the potential demand of cultural-based 3D contents, but even in the effective and actual commercial exigencies of the market, we study the possibility of supplying in the actual effective realization phase different filming options. For this reason the editing of different financial plans is expected in sub-order with the different quality levels demanded by the market which is actually interested in our plan.
This means that the discriminating principal factor in the realization of different financial plans is represented, so, by the setting choice subordinate to the to the quality yield wanted for the final output. It’s important to specify, at this stage, that the filming for the pilot are realized with the minimum setting actually possible at the moment of the filming (September 2011) offered from the market of 3D filming.
This is to test our effective operative efficiency in realizing very low-low budget productions of stereoscopic contents, still obtaining an adequate balance of quality Vs costs.
